Granted that I am a very intermediate film guy, this is my favorite way to express creativity and my passion for such a proud sub-culture, rock climbing. As I am one of the leading member of the Ryan Palo fan club (Sarcasm intended), he has alway givin' me something to chase around. Ryan's ambition, kindness and humor have made all these Oreganic projects exciting and interesting to work on. My goal is to share these emotions and adventures though these films, whether a choppy, climbing porn or a short story.

This short film highlights Ryan Palo as the first Bend resident to Redpoint the proud and world famous route, Just Do It. This route was recognized as the highest graded route in the United States for several year and still has a very savage & historical reputation. I learned a great deal of history about the route during my interview with Alan Watts. Someday I will release a more lengthy film with all of the interviews and footage I collect along the way, with my mission being the History of Smith Rock Climbing.

I realized I left out a credit. The Scott Franklin portrait photo is by Cathy Beloeil. Still unsure who shot the Didier Raboutou Snowbird shot. Palo shot the b/w Monkey Face photo.

Anyway, Happy Holidays. Keep rocking at life.
I created this "Real World" style video as a gift for my good friend Brent. This was his bachelor party. Better than strippers right? We floated the Wild & Scenic section of the Rogue River for 5-days. I shot the whole trip with a GoPro Hero. About halfway through editing my program was locking up, I think it was my hardware. I was able to export and finish with only a few audio and cutting errors I just couldn't fix. This was a super fun project. There is some heavy language. If you are bothered by that... fuck it, you should still watch it. Congratulations to my good friends Brent & Maylene Campbell.
20 minutes of pure debauchery, grab a beer and enjoy.Crimper, I don't even know her.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11720720462169546274noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-485242699149350942.post-88562131253503040842011-10-19T19:59:00.000-07:002011-10-19T19:59:15.583-07:00Eat, sleep, climb, dance.
It’s open season at Smith Rock. Temps are sick, people are psyched and I see some sick ascents on the horizon. Many people will agree that Smith Rock climbing can sometimes be a mental nightmare, but that nightmare is balanced by one of the friendliest climbing communities in the country.

Living out here in the country has it’s up’s and down’s, but I’d say mostly “up’s”. The Good Earth… Terrebonne is home to America’s first sport climbing crag, surrounded by beautiful countryside and endless mountain views. But with such a small sleeper community, it’s very hard to have a social life. Winter is brutally boring if the sun doesn’t shine. Redmond sucks. Fall and Spring are pretty happening in the climbing world, but then what. The Terrebonne Depot is super fun, not late enough. The Fan (aka The Big T’s)? NEVER! Ha! Well, I assume you’ve seen Field of Dreams? We created the Field of Dreams, except it’s 8 kegs, a bar, stage and dance floor by a field.

This is how. I’ll try not to spray to much. Last Winter I entered the Ninkasi Brewery Fresh Flicks outdoor sports video contest. I had two weeks to pumps something out. I didn’t have a camera anymore so I resorted to my hard drive to gather footage that I could piece together for a halfway descent climbing porn. Friends show up to vote and I ended up with 1st prize; Two season passes to Hoodoo and a one year, $1500 sponsorship from Ninkasi Brewery. That’s a lot of beer. We decided to throw some parties.

The Sunday of last Labor Day weekend offered the perfect time to start it off. I thought Sunday night would be appropriate for a few different reasons. First, less competition for a groovy crowd. Second, two days of climbing in a row at Smith is rough. People are more willing to get rowdy and throw a few back that second night. What better way to spend day three of your crusty vacation than recovering you tendons with a side of hangover. It was like Spring Break in Cabo. Almost. We started off with a reggae band from Bend, The 2nd Hand Soldiers. They killed it. 4 kegs down.

Then comes the Fall. The money time of year. Smith is packed, locals are stuck on their projects, let’s party. I ordered a nice little “potty box”, Kegs, and extreme freak dancers from Vegas. Justin and Andi set up their food cart, SoWild Fish & Chip. We set up the lights, then the bar, and waited. On Saturday, October 8th Tony Smiley had the crown hoppin’. For those of you that don’t know of this man, Tony Smiley is a one man band who packs the dance floor with his mix of rock, human beat boxing, 80's new wave rhythms, and yes, dash of Mongolian throat singing, combine into one huge mountain of a performance. His songs are original, groove laden works of art that rock. He is a loop ninja. Who doesn’t love ninjas? Five Ten and Metlious Mountain Products hooked up some shoes and gear to raffle off to help support the chaos.

2 kegs and one party left. The next weekend was unbelievable. It was like a Snoop Dogg video. The talented 4 on the Floor showed up and decided to throw a bluegrass tantrum. Clothes were coming off, dirty dancing, people were doing body shots! Something like that.

Huge thanks to Ninkasi Brewery in Eugene, Oregon, Metolius Mountain Products, Five Ten, Tony Smiley, 4 on the Floor, Dearric Winchester, Luke, Jesse and everyone who showed up.

My thoughts? We should do this every season. I think we need a beer sponsorship. Others are stuck in the gym dreaming of the real thing.

Home to world-class crack climbing and over 60 bouldering satellites, Oregon hides under the radar of many travelers. The quest for new areas has left many classic crags like Smith Rock forgotten by the climbing masses. Scarface has been recognized as the first 5.14a established by an American on U.S. soil. After Scott Franklin did the first ascent in 1988, Todd Skinner and Throwin’’ The Houlihan in Wild Iris, Wyoming joined the ranks in 1991. After a brief down-rating to 13d, Scarface is still among the most classic hard routes in the world holding it’s grade at 5.14a.

During this party endeavor, rumors passed around that Ben Moon was living in Bend and working at Metolius. Weird. Why would the British powerhouse move to Bend? There's gotta be an explanation. Well, there's two Moons orbiting the climbing world. A common confusion among climbers. I later learned more and more about Ben Moon "The Photographer". Quickly, I learned that he was also a very talented climber. I've watched Ben hike stout, forgotten pitches to get the creative angle. I've watched him battle with the best for first ascents at Trout Creek. He's a survivor, a great friend, and a dedicated artist of many mediums.

These are some Oregon sessions with Ben Moon.

Central Oregon offers a number of riverside bouldering satellites. Basalt and Tuff. Some areas won't see a climber for months.
How much time and money did I invest into this radical condo on wheels? The way I see it, If I go broke I have a place to live. An upperclass, dirtbag Vansion. So far I've been on the road for 49 days including the Salmon River trip. The Vansion has offered nothing but comfort and reliability. The full conversion; Lets start with the 2" body lift and my mini big-boy tires (additional 4" clearance), swivel passenger seat, deep cycle battery power with cornucopia of electronic pleasure (plugs, power cooler, tubes lights, toggles, etc), an Ikea futon with a memory foam frosting, mmmmmm, strategic storage, rocket box, and many other details to equal the comfort I've been spraying about. So, the next big question you probably have, what does Greg call this fabulous mobile palace?

With a great group of old & new friends, we enjoyed big & technical white water, sandy beach camping, hot springs, sweat lodge and some granite deep water soloing. Ruby was so cute in her new Ruff Wear lifejacket (Thanks Tara). When we got off the river we decided to spend the night in Riggins, an even more "backwoods" version of the famous river town Maupin, Oregon. We made some new friends at the Rodeo Club bar and called it a night. Well I did. It seems that one of the crew was still going. Mistaking the corner of the Hotel room for the toilet in his sleep. I won't mention any names. What!? I’ve been to this little shanty river town on four different occasions this summer. The climbing kicks serious ass. Like I said in my past Riggins blog, it’s a f-in’ drillfest. An ethical nightmare. A total product of the 90’s. But the climbing is awesome and it’s blazing hot at every other crag in the Northwest states. I see it as a place to get strong instead of hanging out in the sweltering rock gym.

Logan has worked amongst some Riggins old-schoolers, Mike Stoger , Will Nazarian & Jason Karn, and heard all about it. I recall Will telling me that’s where he got in incredible shape before his successful trip to Rifle. Off the couch, then two days on in the cave equals full-body soreness. What next? One of the nicest hot springs I’ve ever experienced. A few miles North of McCall Idaho, I just couldn’t believe I had it all to myself. Even Ruby had a Soak in her own pool. I wish I had a picture of her relaxing. I suppose it shouldn’t be so hard to get her in the bathtub from now on.

No, not cocaine relapse silly, white lines on the highway. Like in all those old country songs? Drivin' trucks, chasin' rodeos, racin' the wind? Or maybe those good ol' boys were high as shit. Whatever. I made it Boulder just in time to keep my homie from going "Boulder" crazy. You've all heard the rumors. Cody Scarpella was now living it. I think he was just starting to get psyched on the area, Eldorado to be specific.
From ground zero, I've watch this kid blast though some hard, scary lines. Apparently, once you get good at rock climbing, you move to Boulder, ha. We got a few pitches in at Boulder Canyon (due to convenience of course) and ran into only two people, people we knew! Random. Sarah Watson and Lizzy Scully. Two lovely girls. Sarah spent a few days at Trout a few years back, hiking the hard splitters. Very talented.

Here we go. The long haul down the longest, straightest road I've ever seen. My itrip was almost useless due to the FM radio clog of Jesus propaganda. I have nothing against it, except when it's jammed in my ears over and over in the middle of my Pink Floyd session, in Kansas. You don't interrupt Roger Waters. Sacrileg. Kansas sucked ass (sorry Ashley). Missouri... Come on. Really? I got pulled over twice within 30 minutes. Apparently Oregonians have a similar reputation as the Nor Cal neighbors. The first cop made me sit in his car. Grilled me like an overdone steak. Who the hell likes overdone steak. No problem though. I had nothing to hide, ha ha. It did blow my mind when he asked me strait up if I was moving pounds or kilos. Ha ha. Yeah, Oregon has a great cocaine distribution program. Almost legal with medical cards right? Same story 30 minutes later. Luckily I couldn't find the other half of my hippy-speedball recipe, which turned out to be in a pretty obvious place. He released me after I told him his cronie down the road already gave me the run-around. Southern Illinois was a little more scenic with the start of the color change. And finally! The Whiskey state! Welcome to Ol' Kentucky! Bluegrass and country songs started coming to me like debt collectors and Missouri bacon. The last leg. I almost drove across the country. Does this count? When I pulled on to Mountain Parkway (40 mins to Miguel's) I was glowing, so was Ruby.
Crimper, I don't even know her.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11720720462169546274noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-485242699149350942.post-50876447257684427832011-01-12T15:09:00.000-08:002011-01-12T15:09:52.502-08:00Climbing in Riggins, Idaho

July 6-11, 2010. Ryan Palo, my good friend and climbing partner, is leaving us. He packed his bags in search for a new chapter of traveling and career. After years of hearing about a heavily engineered limestone cave outside of Riggins, Palo and I thought it would be a nice way to start this chapter. We packed and bailed faster than a fat kid eats Twinkies. After an 8 hours drive we were able to get some pitches in before dark. Two days on, rest day, then 2 more days on. During that time, we both redpointed a route called Tractor Boy, 5.13c. Palo, with his mutant strength, also quickly sent Boo, 5.13c. We a met few dudes from Spokane that frequent the crag. They gave us a lot of insight and history of the area.

In between his stops, we hit three of Southern Oregon’s old & obscure climbing areas. He took me to the Rabbit Ears, near the head of the Rouge River, and showed me a single pitch, ground up route he had put up 15 years ago. After fearfully onsighting his sandbaged, runout route, I was inspired by the 500 foot towers of unclimbed rock. A week later, I decided to start my journey up an unclimbed wall of the east Ear. The only existing routes up this spire were an old 5.8X and a 5.4 exposed hike to the top. I couldn’t find a partner for the first trip down, so I decide to start this route as a rope solo, ground up. After 2 days, 50 scary feet, and 2 bolts later, I realized I should do the remainder with a partner. Back in Terrebonne, I ran into Tom Johns from NZ and the game began. Also joining us was Wes from So. Cal. Him and Tom met in J-tree this Spring, Wes’ stomping grounds near his home in San Diego (which means a whale’s vagina).

Wes and Tom put up another route to the left of Wondering Soul.
